Signs of a Natural Leader

Being a leader does not mean you have to have the nice big corner office. It doesn’t mean you have thousands of people at your beck and call. Being a leader is simply someone that can inspire others. Have you ever been with a group of friends and your dinner reservation fell through and now you have to make a new one? Well, the person who starts the decision making process is the natural leader in that given situation. I did not say the person who starts bossing everyone else around, I said the person who starts the decision making process.

I say natural leader here, but leadership skills can be developed. It takes an active decision to start developing these skills. You then need to actively push yourself out of you comfort zones and look for roles of responsibility. The more roles you take on, the more your leadership skills will evolve.

The more you develop your abilities and the stronger leader you start to become, the easier it is to become discouraged. Especially as others will lack the same passion you have for your projects. Natural leaders are able to keep calm and steady as these situations arise. If you are not the calm and steady type, make sure you take a few deep breaths before you continue to calm yourself down.

Natural leaders walk with a confident posture. If you know that you slouch when you walk, then pin your shoulders back, hold your head up high, and walk around like you own the place. People notice posture. It is important to speak with ‘posture’ in your voice too. Natural leaders speak with confidence. If they know how something is done they, more often than note, end up leading the situation. People just hand over to them, there’s no need for a discussion, people just accept your knowledge. If a natural leader does not know what is going on, they do not pretend to! This is what makes the previous point so important. People know that you are trustworthy; you don’t try fake your way through situations. Because of this they are perfectly happy to give you control when you tell them you know how to do something.

Leaders can act and make decisions under pressure. They know what needs to be done and they go for it!

I want to end off by saying that ‘natural leaders’ were not always ‘natural leaders’. They developed into leaders somewhere during life. It could have been at primary school, it could have been after school. My point is that you can develop yourself into such a great leader that people will look at you and say, “You are a natural leader!”

What is Hindering Your Goals?

Goal Setting Kit

Many people battle with chasing their goals. I say chasing becomes people run after them and often let them drift away! The main reason- excuses and assumptions. It is vital that you never ‘assume’ anything. Have you heard the phrase ‘the sin of assumption’? That is how bad some people see assumption! Your probably thinking, “What are we meant to do if we can’t assume?!” Well, the answer is simple. Deduce! Sure sometimes you have to assume. But never stop aiming for your goals because you have assumed the worse of a situation. It is absolutely fine if you deduce that you cannot go down a route to achieve your goal, but then go and look for another route! Too many people count themselves out because it didn’t work the first time.

When you see Olympic athletes, what do you see? Do you see a talented person? Do you see someone that has everything going for them? Or, do you see someone that achieved the impossible? The difference between Olympic athletes and the average person on the street, is that these athletes did not see the impossible, they saw beyond the realms of their gifts. Their vision was greater than their ability! No-one is born with that much ability! The top performing tennis stars are out every morning from a very early age spending hours every single day on the court working to achieve their vision. But then this is what sets apart the great from the average.

It is entirely up to you whether you want to be great, or average. Maybe you would be happy with just a little bit above average? More than likely you are reading this article because you want to be great!

First thing you need to do is challenge your belief system. What do you believe? Does it restrict your potential? Are you caught up in a box? Once you have defined your belief system it will be simpler to see which belief could be hindering you from achieving your goals. From here you need to try and decide what can aid you in changing your mindset. Little hint- I’ve got an article on mindset. Read it, apply it. Make sure your goals are written down. A goal is simply the shortest route from where you are to where you want to be. It should not be more complicated than this! It should be a journey that you enjoy, seeing results along the journey. Make sure you do enjoy it! This is your life, these are your goals!

Leadership in a Work Environment

Goal Setting Kit

The work environment is full with managers and bosses, but it needs more leaders! Simply put, leaders inspire people so they want to do what they otherwise would have not even thought of.

Leaders create a great environment for others. If you are shouting and screaming at work, you are not leading, please, don’t fool yourself. You are managing. Managers handle situations; leaders give vision to change situations.

In authoritative situations, leaders let people know what is expected of them. If you are a natural leader in a group of friends, obviously it is not wise to tell them what you expect of them, you are friends! If you are in a leadership position for work then it is vital that your employees know what you expect. It could be helpful to go through goal setting with them. Let them take ownership of what you expect them to do. If they are involved in the decision making process, especially involving their career, then there is a good change their work ethics would improve!

As a leader, make sure you talk to your employees with the same amount of respect as you use to talk to your boss. Obviously you are not able to tell your boss what to do. But you can still treat them all with the same level of respect. Watch their attitudes change when you do this, watch their work improve as they begin to feel more valued!

When a job is well done, provide affirmation for the person/people involved. Sure, it is what they are paid to do, but when it is a job well done, often when a job is well done, people went above what is expected.

Don’t take your problems to your employees. If you are having problems whether they are personal or work related, only take your problems up the chain of command. If you think there is nothing wrong taking problems down the chain of command ask yourself this: “Will speaking to my employees fix my problems?” If your employees are the problem you obviously need to speak to them. If they are not, then you are just whining. When leaders whine the respect people have for them drops down a few notches. You may eventually find yourself managing your employees and not leading them simply due to the lack of respect they now have.

Taking your problems up the chain of command allows for your employees to see that you are an action taker. This is extremely beneficial when an employee brings a problem to you (because you are the next person up from them in their chain of command) and you get results. Word will spread that the change is due to your taking action.

I recently hopped on a flight and travelled for 15 hours, including a connection, to attend a conference in Indianapolis. I was there for two nights and listened to the most amazing speakers and bestselling authors and then did the return journey. Such is the nature of my business; I am constantly surrounded by the best of the best! Boyd Matheson kicked off the day’s session talking about Entrepreneurship. This is the first of a series of blog posts I will be doing based on the event.

Being Entrepreneurs we have big and lofty ideas. We’re dreamers. We see the bigger picture. We are in a rapidly evolving society where university/college degrees are out dated within 18 months, unless of course you are in computing, then the degree has a much shorter time span! Most in demand jobs did not even exist 6 years ago. Children at schools are being trained for jobs that will not even exist when the time comes for them to get a job.

It is IMPERATIVE that we all have the Entrepreneurial spirit! Entrepreneurs think differently. We have different goals and aspirations. We know that by applying ourselves and becoming a product of constant education and development we will be in the power seats in life! But why is it that we have so much opposition. Have you ever met that person who told you that your dreams are too far out of your league? Bill Bartmann calls these people ‘negative motivators’. We all have them, not just you. It’s how you respond to these people that defines your future. Notice I said ‘respond’ and not ‘react’.

Boyd Matheson gave a fantastic example. Have you ever watched the sun rise? Have you ever climbed a mountain and watched the sun rise? Do you remember the view? It is one of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen. The view is unreal!

Have you ever met the person that will never get up to see a sunrise? They won’t put the effort in to climb the mountain. And, of course, they criticize those that do. This is figurative, your mountain may be something different to my mountain, but I’m sure you get the idea.

This is difficult to overcome. It is so important that you do not let people discourage you! Once you have seen that view, you will never forget it. It sticks with you. This is what being an Entrepreneur is about. You get a glimpse at something bigger than what you are.

Did you ever notice that when you start climbing the mountain the view does not change that much. You get tired, it gets steep, but you stick with it. As you are elevating more and more you see more and more. Your perspective changes. Your perspective only changes as you elevate more and more. As you get higher and higher the beauty starts to reveal itself. It’s magnificent! Never EVER let someone stuck in a valley below you tell you otherwise!

‘What is above knows what is below. What is below does not know what is above’ Boyd Matheson.

Once you see your mountain, go for it. If you are stuck in a valley, it’s time to get out of it. We ALL need to choose to climb higher. It is a decision we make ourselves. Personally, I compare my life to the Everest of all lives. What is your life going to be?

Pathway to Leadership

Hit The ‘TWEET’ Button Now =>

“There is a leader in most people. It depends on whether the person wants to take on the responsibility of being a leader, as to whether or not they will be a leader.”

This is a quote from my book I am currently writing. I know I should wait to put my book out before sharing this, but sometimes there are nuggets that I just HAVE to share as soon as possible! This is one of them!

Leadership plays a pivotal part in day to day life! I have been asked several times, “Can people develop their leadership skills?” and “can people who are really shy learn to be out going?” The answer is simply, and emphatically ‘YES!!!’ The personal development industry is currently worth over $100 Billion! There are so many books on leadership and self development out there it is hard to know where to start.

In order to develop my own leadership skills I forced myself into circumstances I was uncomfortable with! Literally forced! I was so self conscious that I would not even sing if I was in the car with the radio on full blast and the windows rolled up! Any guesses what I did? Well, I joined a choir! Did I get up on stage and sing in front of people? No, not at first, I was a terrible singer. I did go to EVERY practice every week and eventually they told me my heart was so into it that I made it in the choir!

I wanted to join the British Army. I wanted to go to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and train to be an officer in the Army. It’s DEFINITELY not easy to get in! My first interview was 24 hours. We went out and did numerous tests, then went to bed and the next day carried on. After that we were told if we made it to the second round of interviews! Well, I got through to the next set interviews, which were three nights long and four days. After those interviews I was given the verdict, “Wait for 18 months.” They didn’t think I was ready to do the training yet. I was a shy little Zimbabwean straight out of school, straight off the air plane and looking a little shell shocked. I decided I would buy a tent and live in a camp site for three or four months with the assumption that if I could survive with whatever supplies I had, then I would definitely be able to survive with what the Army gave me. My supplies in a British winter: a 3 man dome tent too small to stand up in, a sleeping bag, and a gas stove (which once erupted in a ball of flames nearly engulfing my tent). You are probably wondering if I made it into Sandhurst? Well, I did. My point here is that I was not ready, but after a lot of work and perseverance, I made it! If you are not able to achieve what you want to do, then position yourself so that when you ARE able you can take it running at full speed!

With leadership the biggest step is being prepared to take the responsibility! From there you can start looking for responsibility, and volunteer for it. No matter how big or how small, it all helps. In order to ‘build’ your skills you need to make sure you are stretching yourself. I now get excited when I have to step out of my comfort zone to do something. I know that when looking at the bigger picture the more I have stepped out of my comfort zone the more I will be able to handle.

If you are serious about becoming a great leader, then step out of your comfort zone. Do everything with an attitude of excellence, and you will become a great and influential person!

Sometimes it will just be nice to know where you are going in life. It could be quite relaxing to know that you are going to have smooth travelling for a while; it could be nice to prepare yourself if you are going to be heading down a bumpy road. But life is not like this. When you take a drive during the daylight you can see for miles and miles, where is the adventure? Sure it’s nice to take a road trip and look at everything around you, but life is not like driving in the daylight.

No, life is like driving at night, when its pitch black out and you cannot see 2 feet outside your side windows, and you can only see 150 feet in front of you. You may know where you want to end up, but you’re on a journey now there is nothing you can do to increase your vision, so just enjoy the ride!

One of the main things you will notice about travel is that you are, most of the time, moving forward. Every now and then you will head down a gravel road, or get stuck in a blizzard. The blizzard could get so bad that you may have to pull over until visibility gets a bit better. When this happens in life, make sure you pull over! Take some time out, and do not burn out! Every now and then when travelling you see a deer staring into your head lights standing in the middle of the road. As horrible as it is to say, the safest thing is to not swerve out the way, you need brace yourself and hit that deer. To many times people have swerved to avoid the deer and they and all the passengers do not make it. When this happens in life you need to make sure that you do what you can to make sure you keep your loved ones safe. Do whatever you can to protect them.
In life you will come across blizzards, and hazards, and gravel roads, just make sure you never put your vehicle into reverse and end up where you have just come from. Always look forward.

If you want to be a great achiever in life you need to focus extra hard on your success. You need great passengers in your car, and believe me, they are easy to find! I for one love going on entrepreneurial journeys with people and helping them reach their success, so if you can’t find anyone to travel with, just drop me an email! It is pivotal you surround yourself with likeminded success oriented people! It is important you start moving! Another great annotation I love is a sail ship cannot turn unless it is moving and has wind in its sails! So get moving, too many people decide one day when! When what? When you have time, money, help? Those are no longer valid excuses, the moment you say “one day when” you may as well forget about it, because that will probably never happen!

Take a stand! Start your journey today! Get the wind in your sails! Put your foot on the accelerator! Just DO something!

How Do You Handle Influence?

I heard a statistic not long ago that 1 edition of the New York Times contains more information than people from the 16th century would know in a life-time. With the popularity of social networking sites growing daily, each and every one of us has the potential to reach more peolpe than a newspaper, whether it is a small town paper, or a big city paper. Some of the more popular people on Twitter are getting followers in the tens of thousands.

Even if you only have 500, 1000, 10000 people following you, you are in a position of infuence! How do you handle that infuence? Are you using it responsibly?

Take some time out to see how you could make a difference to the people who see you as a leader.

Leadership With Passion

Leaders tend to be people that others are attracted to. There is something about them that draws others in. They are trusted and respected and make great role models.

For great leaders this just comes naturally. For people trying to develop leadership skill this is something that must be practiced and tried and tested.

Imagine living in an environment where everything was exciting. Life just got better and better, everyone related well to each other and worked hard at home and the office.

Now imagine an environment where everything was miserable. Going to work every day was a drone, there was constant bickering at work and at home and there just seemed like there was no escape.

These two scenarios are the difference between great leadership in a work place, and a complete lack of leadership in a work place. The first scenario is obviously where everyone would like to be. Unfortunately a lot of companies focus more on managerial skills and not enough on leadership skills. This creates a lack of drive among employees in the work place. Most people spend at minimum 37 hours a week in their office. If you work out how much time you spend at home and subtract the hours you sleep you will likely find that you spend more waking hours at work than at home. And sometimes work is the most miserable place you can think of.

If you are in a position of leadership and your working environment is like this, something needs to change. First of all, make sure you are passionate about your job. The moment people see that you are passionate their perspectives will start to shift. They won’t necessarily change overnight, but it is a start. What else you can do? Well, how about incentives for achieving goals, or KPIs. If you are in an office, maybe introduce casual Fridays. Maybe once a month get your team pizza for lunch.

A leader’s passion should include their employee’s wellbeing, and once your employees start seeing that you are passionate about improving their work space, their attitudes will change. Soon the whole office environment will be like the first scenario above. People’s attitudes from work stretch into their home life, and vice-versa. If they have a good day at work then their home life will improve. When their home life improves then their performance at work will improve.

By performing leadership with passion your team will improve, team members will get promoted, you will get promoted and the company will perform better. Everybody wins!

Leadership is the single biggest factor influencing personal decisions. A good leader is the most powerful asset any business can dream of. A true leader is able to inspire people to do their work. The workers will look up to the leader and admire the leader making the most of their guidance.

Leadership is not an attribute anyone is born with. It is developed throughout life. If you want to become a leader, but think that no-one will ever be interested in following you, you need to change your mindset! You CAN develop yourself into a leader. Do NOT say “One day when I am a leader”! Whether or not you lead one person, or ten thousand people you need to say “Today, I am a leader”, and act on it. Leadership is a constant active effort in order to improve skills and ability to help others.

One of the greatest quotes I love about leadership is simply ‘Serve to Lead’. Leaders are not there for self glorification. They are visionaries always looking ahead at how they can help others and move them ahead. In regards to business they are constantly moving their business forward creating new opportunities for employees.

Leaders are decision makers. They do not procrastinate. They know what needs to be done and they make sure that it gets done. Leaders know how to delegate effectively.

Do not be fearful of messing up. When leaders mess up they take responsibility, learn from the mistake, and next time take their game up a notch. Followers tend to blame others. Take a step in confidence, hold yourself up high. Pin your shoulders back, walk with a confident posture! Posture is important. Talk with confidence and learn how to speak in others. If that is not for you, then take a public speaking course, just get out there and do it. Step outside your comfort zone and take your leadership to the next level.

Do not get management and leadership mixed up. Leaders decide direction and management heads towards that direction. Lead people, manage things.

A practical way to develop leadership in your world today is getting involved/more involved in home business opportunities. Positioning yourself to inspire people will really catapult you ahead. It will also take you out of your comfort zones, which is a fantastic place to be in order to develop your weaknesses into strengths.

“Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.” – Stephen R. Covey
