I recently hopped on a flight and travelled for 15 hours, including a connection, to attend a conference in Indianapolis. I was there for two nights and listened to the most amazing speakers and bestselling authors and then did the return journey. Such is the nature of my business; I am constantly surrounded by the best of the best! Boyd Matheson kicked off the day’s session talking about Entrepreneurship. This is the first of a series of blog posts I will be doing based on the event.
Being Entrepreneurs we have big and lofty ideas. We’re dreamers. We see the bigger picture. We are in a rapidly evolving society where university/college degrees are out dated within 18 months, unless of course you are in computing, then the degree has a much shorter time span! Most in demand jobs did not even exist 6 years ago. Children at schools are being trained for jobs that will not even exist when the time comes for them to get a job.
It is IMPERATIVE that we all have the Entrepreneurial spirit! Entrepreneurs think differently. We have different goals and aspirations. We know that by applying ourselves and becoming a product of constant education and development we will be in the power seats in life! But why is it that we have so much opposition. Have you ever met that person who told you that your dreams are too far out of your league? Bill Bartmann calls these people ‘negative motivators’. We all have them, not just you. It’s how you respond to these people that defines your future. Notice I said ‘respond’ and not ‘react’.
Boyd Matheson gave a fantastic example. Have you ever watched the sun rise? Have you ever climbed a mountain and watched the sun rise? Do you remember the view? It is one of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen. The view is unreal!
Have you ever met the person that will never get up to see a sunrise? They won’t put the effort in to climb the mountain. And, of course, they criticize those that do. This is figurative, your mountain may be something different to my mountain, but I’m sure you get the idea.
This is difficult to overcome. It is so important that you do not let people discourage you! Once you have seen that view, you will never forget it. It sticks with you. This is what being an Entrepreneur is about. You get a glimpse at something bigger than what you are.
Did you ever notice that when you start climbing the mountain the view does not change that much. You get tired, it gets steep, but you stick with it. As you are elevating more and more you see more and more. Your perspective changes. Your perspective only changes as you elevate more and more. As you get higher and higher the beauty starts to reveal itself. It’s magnificent! Never EVER let someone stuck in a valley below you tell you otherwise!
‘What is above knows what is below. What is below does not know what is above’ Boyd Matheson.
Once you see your mountain, go for it. If you are stuck in a valley, it’s time to get out of it. We ALL need to choose to climb higher. It is a decision we make ourselves. Personally, I compare my life to the Everest of all lives. What is your life going to be?
